A self-drive safari in Africa is only as good as your preparation. Get your kit right and you'll camp comfortably, recover from soft sand with ease and stay safe in remote areas. This field-tested 4x4 camping equipment checklist covers everything you need for an African overland trip — most of which comes standard on a fully equipped Wild Quest Overlanders vehicle.
Vehicle recovery & tyres
- Two spare wheels, a high-lift or bottle jack and a sturdy wheel brace
- Tyre repair (plug) kit and a 12V air compressor
- Tyre pressure gauge — deflating for sand is the single most useful skill
- Recovery tracks (sand ladders), a kinetic recovery rope and rated shackles
- A shovel and, for remote routes, a winch
Shelter & sleeping
- Rooftop or ground tent with a comfortable mattress
- Sleeping bags rated for cool desert nights (it can drop below freezing in winter)

- Gas cooker, spare gas, matches and a lighter
- Pots, pan, kettle, chopping board, knife and cooking utensils
- Plates, cutlery, mugs, a washing-up bowl and biodegradable soap
- Non-perishable staples, and fresh supplies bought in the last major town
Water

- A backup water filter or purification tablets for topping up en route
Power & navigation
- Dual-battery system with a solar panel and inverter to keep the fridge and devices running
- USB and 12V charging points
- Offline maps (Tracks4Africa or similar), a GPS and a paper map as backup

- Wide-brim hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen and insect repellent
- Binoculars, a camera with spare batteries, and a good torch
Don't overpack
Weight and space are precious on an overland trip. Pack in soft duffel bags rather than hard cases, keep daily-use items accessible, and resist the urge to bring "just in case" extras — the essentials above cover almost every scenario.
The good news: when you hire from Wild Quest Overlanders, the vehicle arrives already fitted with the rooftop tent, fridge, power system, recovery gear, water tanks and camp kitchen — so your packing list shrinks to clothes, documents and food.
