The Best Self-Drive Safari Routes in Southern Africa

July 18, 2026

Southern Africa is arguably the best region on the planet for a self-drive safari. Good roads connect wild parks, the wildlife is spectacular, and a well-equipped 4x4 opens up routes that guided tours never reach. Here are the best self-drive safari routes in the region, what makes each special, and how to link them into a single overland journey.

1. Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe's largest park is a superb starting point for first-time self-drivers. The roads are well maintained, the campsites are reliable, and the dry-season game viewing around the pumped waterholes is extraordinary — huge elephant herds, lion, and painted dogs. Best from July to October.

2. Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe

A UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Zambezi, Mana Pools is famous for walking among wildlife and for its cathedral-like albida forests. The tracks require a proper 4x4 and the park has a wild, remote feel. This is a bucket-list route for experienced self-drivers.

3. Chobe & Moremi, Botswana

The Chobe riverfront and Moremi's Khwai region deliver some of the highest densities of big game in Africa. Expect deep sand, water crossings and true wilderness camping. Combine them with the Okavango Delta for the classic Botswana loop.

4. Makgadikgadi & Nxai Pans, Botswana

For something completely different, the salt pans offer surreal, horizon-to-horizon emptiness, ancient baobabs and — in the green season — one of Africa's last great zebra migrations. Navigation and self-sufficiency are essential here.

5. Lower Zambezi & South Luangwa, Zambia

Zambia rewards those who venture a little further. The Lower Zambezi offers river-fringed game viewing, while South Luangwa is one of the finest leopard destinations in Africa. Roads are rougher and river crossings seasonal, so plan around the dry months.

6. Namibia: Etosha, Damaraland & the Namib

Namibia is the easiest country in the region to self-drive, with excellent gravel roads and dramatic scenery. Etosha's floodlit waterholes, the desert-adapted elephants of Damaraland and the towering dunes of Sossusvlei make for an unforgettable, well-signposted route.

7. Kruger & the Panorama Route, South Africa

Kruger is the most accessible big-five self-drive park in Africa — tarred roads, well-equipped rest camps and abundant wildlife make it ideal for families and newcomers. Pair it with the Panorama Route's waterfalls and canyons for a varied trip.

How to link them into one overland trip

A popular grand route runs from Zimbabwe (Hwange and Mana Pools) across to Botswana (Chobe, Moremi, the Delta and the pans), with an optional extension into Zambia or west into Namibia. Cross-border travel requires the right vehicle paperwork — a police clearance, cross-border permit and third-party insurance for each country. Wild Quest Overlanders arranges all of this so you can focus on the drive.

Choosing your route

  • First self-drive safari? Start with Hwange, Etosha or Kruger — well-marked and forgiving.
  • Want true wilderness? Mana Pools, Moremi and the Zambian parks deliver remoteness and adventure.
  • Love landscapes? Namibia and the Makgadikgadi Pans are unmatched for scenery.
